About our Pastor
DR. ADDIS MOORE, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Dr. Addis Moore is a Pastor committed to preaching and teaching the Word of God. He was licensed to preach in 1991 and ordained in January of 1992. He received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Saint Thomas Christian College, Jacksonville, Florida; a degree in Business Administration from Albany State University, Albany, Georgia; and a Bachelor of Religious Education from United Theological Seminary, Monroe, Louisiana.
Dr. Moore accepted the call to pastor Mt. Zion Baptist Church in January 1995. His vision and mission has transformed Mt. Zion into a beacon of light and safe haven where individuals find help, hope, and direction.
Under his dynamic leadership, the membership increased from 600 to more than 2,800. Christian Education is an integral component at Mt. Zion, changing members into disciples through the schools of the Church (Worship, Prayer Service, Bible Study, Fulfillment Hour [Sunday School]). He leads a full- and part-time staff of 18 and oversees 94 ministries that meet the needs of the members and the community.
Although Dr. Moore has been called to pastor, he passionately believes that his calling is to minister to the whole person and the whole community. This passion is evident in the many community initiatives that he initiates, spearheads, or champions.
Pastor Moore held community forums to champion literacy and entrepreneurship. He routinely calls the community to action and organizes local pastors and community leaders in rallies, marches and forums in an effort to curb violence and other negative behaviors that plague the community.
During his tenure in Kalamazoo, he has led the Church to open two new businesses, the Living Well Fitness Center and the Mt. Zion Bookstore. The Living Well Fitness Center was opened in 2007 with Dr. Moore’s passion to change the health of the community, economically change lives, and that the Church should minister to the entire person spiritually and physically. The Mt. Zion Bookstore was opened in 2009 to support the Christian Education Ministry and to promote reading. The Bookstore reinvests in the community and equips the people of God to transform our community.
The Church began a television broadcast, Growing God’s Kingdom According To His Word, in 2003 which is shown 23 times per week in southwest and mid-Michigan, reaching a potential audience of 8.2 million to minister to those who are hospitalized, home bound, or otherwise cannot attend any church. It is shown globally on the internet via You Tube. In addition, all of Mt. Zion’s Worship Experiences are on Ustream.
He established an Endowment Fund that provides scholarships of $10,000 annually and funds ministries. This fund ensures that Mt. Zion will continue to impact lives for years to come.
Dr. Moore’s influence has benefited countless individuals outside of Mt. Zion’s congregation. He has been a leading force behind phenomenal change for church growth in the Chain Lake District Association where he served as President for 12 years, the Wolverine State Congress of Christian Education where he serves as President, and in the National Baptist Congress where he serves as a Board member and an instructor in the Ministers’ Division
His gift for teaching and leadership is well known in the Kalamazoo community, state of Michigan, and the United States. He has become a sought-after workshop lecturer/teacher/preacher in leadership and church growth. In addition, he has co-authored a book, A Biblical Model for Christian Education—Teaching Methods of Jesus.
Pastor Moore was recognized for his community service by Ujima Enterprises and WMU Office of Diversity and Inclusions with The Award of Sankofa for Outstanding Community Service in June 2011. He was also recognized for his community service by the Metropolitan Kalamazoo Branch NAACP Humanitarian Award in November 2011.
He is married to Gwendolyn L. Moore, who holds a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration and is a professional in the medical field. They are the proud parents of two sons, Michael and Christopher, who are both ministers, and one daughter, Veeta Perry. They are blessed with one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law and three granddaughters.
