Christian Education is the foundation of this ministry.  We believe that every individual should know and be able to properly discern the Word for himself.  Our Christian Education is designed to meet you where you are, to
Mt. Zion's founder and first pastor, Rev. Yale H. Putney and a few devoted followers formally organized Mt. Zion Baptist Church on March 6, 1921 at Painters Hall on Main Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Pastors succeeding Rev. Putney were Rev. R. Joseph Redmond, Rev. Samuel Coleman, Rev. Agnew Cooper, Rev. Johnson, Rev. Theodore Roman, Rev. William F. Early, Rev. B.A. Roberson, Rev. A.E. Roberson; Dr. Otha Gilyard; and Rev. Addis Moore. Rev. Terry Mahone and Rev. Maurice Harley served as interim pastors during periods of pastoral vacancies.

The Church continued to grow under the various pastors. Under the leadership of Pastor Gilyard, the Mt. Zion Church family undertook a $1 million building program to accommodate the growth of the church. On August 3, 1980, and Chestnut Street was renamed Roberson Street in commemoration of Pastors B.A. and A.E. Roberson.

From 1975 to 1993, the membership more than tripled. The following outreach programs were initiated and administered under Rev. Gilyard’s leadership: Safe House, Pride Place, the Scout House, Family Institute, Parenting Classes, Northside Little League, a tutoring program, a radio ministry, and the Senior Ecumenical Center, in joint partnership with St. Augustine Catholic Church.

In January 1995, Rev. Addis Moore accepted the call to pastor Mt. Zion and was installed on February 19, 1995. Under the leadership of Pastor Moore, the church undertook a $2.5 million expansion project that more than doubled the size of the existing facility. The expansion would add a wing of classrooms, a larger conference room, a chapel for the Youth Church, a library, additional seats to the sanctuary, a fellowship hall, and additional office space and subsequently remodeled the Atrium area.

What should I wear when I come to a service at Mt. Zion?
When you come to Mt. Zion, you'll see individuals dressed in suit & tie,  dresses, business casual, and others dressed casually (jeans).  There is no dress code for individuals to attend Mt. Zion's services.  So, please come with what you feel is appropriate.  If, however, you feel your clothing is not appropriate, we do not want that to be a barrier for you.  We will free provide clothing at our clothing boutique on our campus, for infants through adults.  We just want you to come.  ( We have a clothing boutique on our campus with items for men, women children and infants, and it's FREE! )
IS there anything for my children to do?
Certainly.  Youth are a priority at Mt. Zion.  We have designed several age-appropriate areas for our youth to grow and learn.  Our TOT Spot ministers to children ages 6 months to 4 years of age.  Our KIDS Blast ministers to children grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Our Inside Out ministers to youth in middle school.  Our Transform Student Ministries ministers to our middle  and high school youth.
What are your service times?
Main Weekend Worship Experiences - Sundays at 7:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Fulfillment Hour (a.k.a. Sunday School) - Sundays at 9:45 a.m.

Prayer Service & Bible Study - Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Do you have anything for the MILLENNIAL age group?
Yes.  Mt. Zion has a large millennial population.  This population includes a large number of students from area colleges and universities (Battle Creek Community College, Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Western Michigan University).  There are many opportunities to get connected for millennials.  In addition to college-age students, there are many young families who are a part of our congregation.

Additionally, several of our key leaders are within this age group.
What should I expect when I come worship at Mt. Zion?
When you arrive on our campus, you'll see and feel genuine love from people.  During the worship experiences, we encourage individuals to participate through singing, prayers, and response to the Word.  Each of our worship experiences includes energetic and engaging music.
How do I become a member of Mt. zion?
Becoming a member of Mt. Zion is easy.  You can call or stop by the church anytime and let the receptionist know that you want to join.  During our weekend worship experiences, a minister will extend a formal invitation to discipleship and you may walk down the isle to express that you want to be a part of this fellowship.  You may also let any one of our leaders know your interest.  In conclusion, any day of the week is a good day to become a part of Mt. Zion.

Our Vision

"A Vibrant Community Living By Faith"
This vision reflects the results of doing things God's way.  It is a picture of how things ought to be when obedience to God is practiced.  The word "Vibrant" is living like God and acting like God - looking like God says in John 10:10b and 2 Corinthians 5:7.  It is getting God results.

Our Mission

"Empowering People To Transform Themselves and the Community"
The disciple-making process starts with believers being transformed themselves - 2 Corinthians 5:17.  We empower individuals with the necessary tools to live transformed lives themselves and send them back out to transform their community (work, home, school, etc.).
